Food Chains

This week we have had seveal science experiments and experiences where we learnt more about animals in their habitat. We made different kinds of food chains to share our understanding of land and water food chains. What did you learn about food chains during the week?

How does a plant get water?

We have had a very busy and productive week looking at plants as part of our habitats unit. We conducted an experiment with celery and water that had food colouring in it to see how water travels through a plant. What did you find out about how water travels through plants?

We used four different colours in the 400 mls of water

Our new unit our inquiry is about plants, animals and habitats. Here is a clip showing some amazing features of our natural world. What did you enjoy about this clip? What did you notice about the animals, plants or habitats?

Weekend with Sarim

Chilling out by the lake.

At Zabeel Park: Kevin wants to be part of the activities.

Melting Chocolate Experiment! What is Matter? Part 2

Today we tested out our predictions about the chocolate melting. We used 3 different plates made from paper, plastic and aluminium. Half of the samples we put in the shade and the other half were put directly in the sun. Daniel decided to bring a magnifying glass to see if it would speed up the melting process:

Here are some of the students making observational sketches and discussing our thoughts about the experiment. Stay tuned to find out more about our observations and conclusions about our experiment.

What is Matter?

Today we started to look at matter and to discuss what happens to it when it is heated or cooled. This is a follow up from our Science week where we looked at the properties of solids and liquids. Here are some of our ideas about matter:

How can heat change matter?

The sun giving heat energy.

The sun has lots of power of heat and chocolate is matter. So I think that the heat affects the matter and makes it change. Maybe the matter takes in the energy.- Abdullah

Heat is an energy which can change matter. Heat can melt a solid. Heat can make the particles in a solid spread out.- Adam
The sun’s heat will melt a solid if it is very hot. You could put water on the oven and turn on the heat. This would make the water turn from a liquid to a gas. If I held an ice cube in my hand it would melt because of the heat coming from my hand.- Daniel

The sun can change matter by melting it. A stove can change matter by boiling a liquid.- Caoimhe

Here are some of our predictions:

It will melt in about 50 minutes because it is turning to winter here. If it is colder it will take longer to melt. Caoimhe
I think that the chocolate will melt in the sun because the sun is hot. The sun will turn the chocolate into a liquid.- Elyazia

I think the chocolate will melt a little bit and be sticky.- Mohammad

If it is a very hot day the chocolate will melt. If it is not hot then it won’t melt.- William

Some of our wonderings:

How does a blanket make heat and keep you warm?- Daniel
Why can’t liquid be still like a solid?- Adam
What would happen if a liquid and a solid combine?- Abdullah
Why can’t water turn into a solid immediately when it evaporates?- Daniel

Here is a catchy tune to help you remember about solids liquids and gases. Do you have any more wonderings about matter?

Helpers Role Plays

As part of our assessment for our Helpers unit of inquiry our class will be presenting role plays about helpers in the community. This afternoon we were hard at work practising our parts and planning our storyboards. Here are some photos of the action. How did you think you showed co operation with your group members? Leave your ideas in the comment box. I would love to hear what you enjoyed about the activity.

What made Tiddalik Laugh?

We are going to start practising for our Grade 2 concert soon. Our class performance piece will be “What made Tiddilik Laugh?” Have a look at the story and think about which part you may like to play. We will have our try outs before the Winter break.
